The center of Puerto Vallarta’s old town, home to shops, restaurants, bars, and the lively Malecon oceanfront promenade, is about a half-hour away by car. Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport is a 10-minute drive from the resort’s main gate, and the cruise ship terminal in Marina Vallarta is five minutes further. There’s not much in the surrounding area of Nuevo Vallarta beyond other hotels and resorts, many owned by the same parent company, which has continued to dominate the area with resorts and time-shares in recent years. The Grand Mayan itself is on a lovely stretch of beach on the Bay of Banderas. From there, six different shuttle lines drive the additional miles to the various resorts. The complex has its own intense security gates to pass through (guests have to leave IDs during their stay, and many forget to retrieve them) before driving for a few more miles to the valet parking area. The Vidanta resort complex sits off of busy Highway 200 in Nuevo Vallarta, an area of predominantly hotels and resorts 12 minutes north of the airport and 30 minutes from downtown Puerto Vallarta.

The Grand Mayan is a great place to unwind, though guest might have to tolerate some time-share sales pitches in the process. And in case guests forget they’re at a Mayan-themed resort, they can look for larger-than-life reminders - like the replica pyramid outside and the mysterious dark room with towering Mayan statues inside. The wide lazy river is a particularly nice feature, winding its way through the large property under groves of palm trees. Whether at the swim-up bar or the kids’ water park, everyone seems to be kicking back and having a great time. A mix of adults and families with small children keeps the beautiful, sprawling pool complex busy. Once settled, though, guests are in for a lively party atmosphere. Even at the Grand Mayan itself, things feel very spread out and there’s lots of walking to be done to get around. Six different shuttle lines transport guests in golf carts to the different resorts and between the various amenities of the complex. Won’t be coming back and I’m still staying here as I write. The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Resort is one of four sprawling properties in the massive Vidanta resort complex that’s so huge, it feels almost like a small town in its own right (it even has its own exit signs on the highway). Made me feel like everything is a money grab here. PLEASE DONT GO TO THE TIMESHARE, the salesmen put the cherry on top for my experience. The pool in our room was nasty, and the cherry on the top was vida vacations timeshare, the kept us for over 6 hrs, I felt preyed on, no matter how much else said no. If you’re staying at the grand Mayan or bliss you’re out of the way from all things.

Wouldn’t be bad if it wasn’t 100 degrees out. Traveling around is difficult and confusing even with signs, most places take 10-15 mins walking. All the food is overpriced to compensate for the all the upgrades/ pandemic losses. Someone said to me they are trying to be the Mexican Disney world and it can’t be more true, but they are doing bad at that. Now for the bad, the place is too big for it own good. Some workers are amazing and really help out. Please don’t stay here, the resort itself is beautiful and looks amazing.

I first visited about 20 years ago and stayed at the Grand Mayan, which hasn’t been updated much in 20 years, but the newer additions to the property have a more contemporary feel. The property is constantly being added to. The beach is rocky and not very swimmable but still picturesque.

The higher level of a room you purchase allows access to the grounds of that area plus every private pool area of a lesser value.

Most areas are connected by boardwalk through the jungle canopy, or wait for a free tram going through right direction. All the food is exorbitantly expensive even for American prices. They do have a crocodile enclosed in a gated pond. They have the Jurassic Park trams and are even building a gondola to be able to travel over the jungle of the resort grounds to their water park across the highway. It feels like a fancy resort meets Jurassic Park.
